Meet the Team

  • Rowena Craig

    MA VetMB MRCVS

    Practice Director & Veterinary Surgeon

    Rowena qualified from Cambridge University in 2002 and began her career as a mixed-practice Veterinary Surgeon in Malvern and then Montgomery, Powys.

    In 2008 she settled in Herefordshire where she worked for 14 years in an established mixed Veterinary practice. Her interests lie in both small animals and equines.

    Rowena set up Mortimer Equine Vets in 2022, an independent, first opinion, ambulatory equine practice. In April 2024, Mortimer Vets was opened in Leominster providing a small animal service to run along side the existing equine practice.

    Rowena has 2 children who take up most of her spare time, with after school activities and Pony Club competitions at the weekends. She is a keen horse rider, & enjoys eventing her own horses.

  • Abi Speakman

    BVM BVS MRCVS

    Veterinary Surgeon

    Abi grew up in Norfolk. She graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2020, and then worked in mixed practice for a couple of years before joining the Mortimer Equine team in 2023.

    She works full time; splitting her days between Equine & Small animal work.

    Abi is particularly interested in equine dentistry and small animal surgery, and really loves how much variety every day brings! 

    Outside of work she enjoys long walks and running with her mad spaniel and is a happy hacker when someone will lend her a horse to ride! When the nights draw in she can often be found spinning yarn from the fleeces of her in-laws Shetland sheep and knitting, though she rarely ends up wearing what she makes!

  • Karolina Kaczmarczyk

    BVMSci MRCVS

    Veterinary Surgeon

    Karolina (Kaz) graduated from the University of Surrey in June 2024 and is the newest member of our practice. Born in Poland, she moved to the UK and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon, where her interest in sport horse stud work started.

    Kaz enjoys all parts of veterinary work, particularly equine and canine reproduction. She has spent a lot of time in some of the busiest equine reproduction establishments in the UK, gaining invaluable experience in mare and stallion fertility, foaling and canine reproduction techniques and management. She has furthered her interest through breeding her own horses and representing Team GB at the 2024 Young Breeders Championships at ASK Stud in Denmark.

    Kaz lives in the lovely Suckley Hills, with her dogs, horses and sheep. Outside of work, she spends her days out with her animals or at the pub with a nice pint of cider in hand!

  • Holly Spurr

    BVM BVS MRCVS

    Veterinary Surgeon

    Holly graduated from Nottingham Vet school in 2016. She started out in mixed practice in Mid wales and still continues to enjoy working across all species. Holly joined the Mortimer team back when Rowena first set up on the equine side, initially covering holidays but then as a more regular member of the team.

    She enjoys general medicine and particularly enjoys ultrasound scanning and also surgery in small animals.

    In her spare time Holly enjoys exploring the countryside with her Labrador Riley and horse Jack. Many of you may have met her cheeky little rescue spaniel Finch too. She loves travelling the world and has been lucky to see some incredible places over the years.

  • Ruth Smith

    RVN

    Practice Manager & Veterinary Nurse

    Ruth qualified from Holme Lacy College with a National Vocation in Veterinary Nursing Level 3, in May 2002. She went on to work at a busy mixed practice in Leominster and stayed there for the next 22 years!! 

    She joined Mortimer Equine Vets at the beginning of April 2022 when Rowena was just starting up. 

    Ruth enjoys all aspects of veterinary work and particularly enjoys equine nursing. 

    Outside of work Ruth has a busy family life and spends much of her spare time taking her daughters to Pony Club and looking after all of her animals at home.

  • Kerry Jenkins

    RVN

    Veterinary Nurse

    Kerry attended Animal Care Courses before qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse from Hartpury College in 2009. She has worked in mixed veterinary practices ever since in different areas of Herefordshire.

    She enjoys all aspects of nursing as well as being on reception to greet and give advice to clients. She has worked at Mortimer Vets since it first opened its small animal side in April 2024.

    Outside of work Kerry likes exploring new walks with her family and terrier; either in the countryside or on the beach.

  • Fiona Moss

    RVN

    Head Veterinary Nurse

    Fiona graduated from Reaseheath College in 2019. She has worked mainly in mixed practice, although has also worked in small animal & farm only practices,. She has locumed doing out-of-hours shifts at VetsNow.

    Fiona worked for Mortimer Equine Vets prior to joining the team at Mortimer Vets as Head Nurse.

    Fiona has a keen interest in small animal anaesthesia and in-patient care, along with using her equine nursing expertise.

    Outside of work Fiona enjoys walking with her Patterdale terrier, Bee. They often venture to the mountains of Snowdonia. Fiona is a keen baker; the Mortimer Vets team are often her taste testers! Socialising with family and friends is also a high priority, along with travelling to new places and exploring the world.

  • Fern Sheers

    RVN & APVN Reptiles & Amphibians

    Veterinary Nurse

    Fern graduated from Hartpury University in 2020. She has worked in a mixed and small animal/exotic practice before joining Mortimer Vets.

    Fern is a registered veterinary nurse with an advanced nursing certificate in reptiles and amphibians. She is a clinical coach and has also completed training in canine diabetes and dentistry. Fern has a keen interest in medical nursing and loves to perform consultations on all topics. Fern specialises in caring for native wildlife species. She has used her career to travel - including working with a local animal management team in Africa.

    Outside of work Fern enjoys long walks with her Border Terrier, Chester, and keeping her menagerie of animals happy. She also enjoys baking and family time.

  • Tara Deakins

    RVN, BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing

    Veterinary Nurse

    Tara graduated from Harper Adams University in 2022. She has previously worked in a mixed practice and joined the Mortimer team in April 2024.

    Tara has a particular interest in monitoring anaesthetics of various surgeries and also finds in-patient care very rewarding specifically the more critical cases.

    Since she qualified, Tara has been enthusiastic to develop and learn new skills; such as Schedule 3 Nursing, which will allow her to have more of a surgical role. She aspires to be a clinical coach in the near future.

    Tara works out of hours shifts for VetsNow to gain more experience in emergency cases.

    In Tara’s spare time she enjoys being with her corgi, Vixey, helping out on her home farm, and travelling.

  • Sally Allen

    Equine Administrator

    Sally lives near Church Stretton on a small holding. She enjoys riding her horse, Harley, and being part of their local Riding Club. They hope to have a go at Western riding very soon.

    She owns two dogs, Percy and Walter, along with rare breed sheep and a goat . They all keep her very busy!

    Sally enjoys being part of the Mortimer Equine Vets/Mortimer Vets Team and is often the first point of contact for our Equine clients.
